Black Spiders Lesson 1

I had so much fun in our Black Spiders class! I look forward to making music together for the rest of our semester.

A few logistical notes:

• Please keep bring all materials (workbook, tambourine, and class manipulatives) to class each week.

• Class is a time to engage with your child. I lead the activities and give suggestions for how to interact, but if that doesn't resonate with your child, feel free to adapt. This is meant to be personal and age appropriate interaction!

• If your child becomes fussy or disruptive, feel free to take a break in the piano room, in the hallway or on the stairs until they are calmed down and ready to rejoin the class.

• Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have throughout the semester.

This semester’s themes include trains, frogs, manners, opposites, and (of course) spiders!

While the fear of spiders is quite common, it is, for the most part, completely unfounded. Even the most dangerous spiders are non-aggressive and will only bite in self-defense. Besides that, the creatures can actually be quite useful.

Spiders feed on other common indoor pests like roaches, earwigs, flies, moths and mosquitoes. They also eat bugs that feast on crops. The study of spiders provides many innovative possibilities in the field of medicine, science, and engineering. Fun spider fact: the tensile strength of spider silk is comparable to high-grade alloy steel.

It’s going to be a great semester singing about these fascinating and helpful creatures!

Optional home fun activity: Do the Name Recognition activity on page 20 of your workbook
