Orange Roots Lesson 6

Updated: Feb 16

Wow! What a fun lesson #6. I was blown away with your children's compositions this week! The creativity and personality that I saw meeting with each student one on one was amazing! Everyone came to their private lesson with an idea of what they wanted to do. It was fun to flesh out their ideas and talk about what tools we have to help them express what they wanted to (major or minor, what position, what chords or intervals sound good, A and B sections). And having that vocabulary from the past 3 years to draw on was amazing. In just a short 20 minutes, I could see them making connections about sounds and music concepts and what they wanted to create. Every student left beaming about the chance to express themselves and were so excited to see their song looking so professional and printed.

Please have your child play their piece for you and prepare to be amazed. Our compositions are not finished yet so encourage your child to keep working. Now that we have something on paper, encourage your student to continue practicing their composition and add more to it. They don't need to write it down as music notation (although they totally can), but they can memorize what they add or draw a picture or make notes to help them remember. Even notation that is not a correct reflection of what they are playing is okay, as long as they understand what it means. This is all part of the learning to create process. We will have another private lesson on Lesson 11. Let me know if your child needs a little extra help between now and then. Persuade them to start working on the next part of their song. Continue to add to your compositions. You’re on a roll, so don’t stop now!

Notice that there is still a theory page and homework assignments for week 6. Just because we didn't meet together, doesn't mean they get the week off. They can have that when the summer comes. For now, let's finish out strong!

On From the New World, don't forget about the 'blue chord position' and special 'bass C' position that the LH will need to move to on pg. 15 of Part III.

Watch this video of a young prodigy composer who pulls four musical notes out of hat, improvising and composing a piano sonata in under a minute.
